Factory-tapered panel edges create a shallow recess designed to receive joint compound and reinforcing tape. Paper tape is embedded into a continuous bed of fresh compound and wiped firmly enough to remove excess material without leaving dry areas beneath the tape. Once embedded, the reinforcement bridges the two gypsum panels while leaving sufficient recess for subsequent coats to bring the joint flush with the surrounding board faces.
Butt joints occur where two non-tapered panel ends meet, leaving no factory recess for tape and compound. Paper tape therefore sits slightly above the board plane, requiring the finished joint to be widened substantially to make that buildup visually disappear. Rather than applying a thick narrow ridge, compound is feathered progressively outward so the elevation change becomes difficult to detect under normal lighting.
Paper tape has a manufactured centre crease that allows it to fold accurately into 90-degree inside intersections. Compound beneath both wings bonds the tape to the adjoining gypsum surfaces while the crease establishes a continuous corner line. Excess material is removed during embedding because heavy compound accumulation in the corner can create rounded intersections that remain visible after painting.
Exposed outside corners require rigid reinforcement because joint tape alone cannot establish or protect a projecting edge. Metal, vinyl or paper-faced corner bead creates a straight corner profile while its flanges provide the transition onto the gypsum faces. Accurate bead alignment is established before compound is applied, since finishing material can feather a properly positioned corner but cannot reliably correct a bead that is twisted or bowed.

Setting-type compound hardens through a chemical reaction, allowing deeper fills to become firm without relying entirely on evaporation. Products commonly designated 20, 45 or 90 indicate approximate setting characteristics rather than guaranteed working times under every site condition. Setting compound is particularly useful where joints contain deeper voids or require a stable initial fill before subsequent finishing coats.
After tape is embedded and the initial compound has hardened, additional coats extend progressively beyond the joint. Wider drywall knives distribute compound across a larger surface so the transition from joint buildup to gypsum face occurs gradually. The objective is not to make every joint perfectly level in a narrow band, but to create a sufficiently broad transition that the eye cannot readily detect the elevation change.
Feathering removes excess compound along the outer edges of each coat while leaving enough material over the centre to conceal tape and joint geometry. Holding the drywall knife at a controlled angle applies greater pressure toward the outside edge, producing a thin transition onto the board face. Proper feathering reduces both sanding labour and the risk of visible ridges under paint.
Ready-mixed drying compound releases moisture into the surrounding air as it cures, so coat thickness, temperature, humidity and ventilation all influence drying time. A surface that appears lighter in colour may still contain moisture beneath a heavier application. Applying another coat prematurely can prolong total drying and contribute to shrinkage, which is why each application should become adequately dry before the finishing sequence continues.

Paper tape can blister when insufficient compound remains beneath it or when sections fail to make complete contact with the bedding coat. Applying additional mud over a hollow bubble does not restore adhesion underneath. The loose section is opened or removed, the substrate is cleaned, and fresh tape is embedded into sufficient compound before the area is recoated.
Raised knife lines and hardened compound edges become increasingly visible once primer and paint create a uniform surface. High ridges are carefully scraped or sanded before another thin coat is applied, rather than buried beneath progressively thicker mud. Using increasingly wide knives distributes the correction across more surface area and avoids creating a noticeable hump around the original defect.
Drying-type joint compound loses water as it cures and can shrink where it has been applied too heavily, particularly over deeper depressions. Entrapped air can also leave small pinholes in the surface. Thin subsequent applications fill these imperfections more predictably than one heavy coat, while adequate drying between applications prevents hidden shrinkage from appearing after the final sanding.
Drywall screw heads require enough compound to become flush with the surrounding panel without creating isolated raised spots. Fasteners are typically covered with multiple thin applications because the first coat can shrink into the depression as it dries. A final pass checks each location under raking light so individual screw patterns do not remain visible across the painted wall or ceiling.
Numbers such as 20, 45 and 90 identify approximate setting-time categories for chemically setting joint compounds. They do not necessarily represent exact usable working times, because mixing conditions, product formulation and temperature can affect handling. Faster-setting products suit time-sensitive fills, while longer-setting compounds provide more working time across larger joint areas.
Paper tape provides continuous reinforcement across gypsum joints and has a factory crease for forming inside corners. Fibreglass mesh is self-adhesive and has different compound requirements; manufacturers commonly specify setting-type compound when mesh is used. The tape and compound therefore need to be treated as a compatible joint system rather than interchangeable materials.
There is no single required finished width because board alignment and joint buildup determine how far compound must be feathered. Since square panel ends provide no recessed taper, a butt joint may need to extend approximately 300 mm (12 in.) or more onto each side to visually disguise the raised centre. Wider does not necessarily mean thicker—the objective is a gradual transition.
Product requirements vary, but major gypsum manufacturers commonly specify maintaining temperatures of at least approximately 10°C (50°F) during joint treatment and until compounds are adequately dry. Sudbury winter projects therefore require conditioned interior temperatures rather than attempting to finish gypsum in an unheated renovation. Manufacturer instructions for the specific compound take precedence.
Residual sanding dust forms a weak layer between the finished compound and subsequent coating. Heavy dust can interfere with primer adhesion and make surface imperfections harder to evaluate. After final sanding, walls and ceilings should be cleaned appropriately without saturating the compound so the finished surface is ready for the next decorating stage.
